Shuang Wen Academy Network (SWAN)

About us: Founded in 1996 as a non-profit, community-based organization, Shuang Wen
Academy Network (SWAN), proposed to the New York City Department of Education (formerly
Board of Education) the Shuang Wen School, which was later established in 1998 as a New York
City public school. The goal of SWAN is to conduct the After-School and Summer Programs and
support the Shuang Wen School (PS 184M), as well as serve as a bridge between the School and
the community.
SWAN’s After-School and Summer Programs have been providing a Mandarin Language and
Chinese Culture Program in support of the Shuang Wen School’s dual language/dual culture
mission. The long term vision for the children at the Shuang Wen School is to prepare them in
both English and Mandarin, American and Chinese cultures, in order that they may participate
fully and contribute to their community and the world. Over the past 12 years, Shuang Wen
School, incorporating the programs provided by SWAN, has achieved impressive
accomplishments, which earned the school an outstanding reputation at the city, state and national
levels. The school is also featured in New York City’s Best Public Elementary Schools and New
York City’s Best Public Middle Schools (Vanessa Witenko, Richard Yeh, May 2007).
The Position: The Board of Trustees of SWAN seeks a dynamic leader with strong core values
to continue and expand the mission of SWAN, and who will:
- provide strategic thinking and leadership to direct SWAN to the next level of service
excellence
- inspire and develop the staff and members of the Board to achieve SWAN’s mission
- diversify and expand fundraising, and develop alternative sources of income
- strengthen relations with community leaders and organizations, elected officials as well as
federal, state and local government agencies
Under the oversight of SWAN’s Board of Trustees, reporting directly to the Board Chair, and
working closely with the Principal of the Shuang Wen School, the Executive Director will oversee
a staff of 75+ (including part-time teachers), and be responsible for all aspects of the organization:
shaping policies in partnership with the Board of Trustees, managing the professional staff
responsible for programs, finances, & operations, and contract funding/grant management.
The position requires a Bachelor’s Degree, graduate degree strongly preferred, and at least 3
years’ proven experience as a senior level manager in the non-profit sector and/or educational
settings, engaged with the following responsibilities:
- program operations and fiscal management
- leadership capability to develop a strong and committed Board and staff
- forming positive relationships with the Board, staff, funding sources and other
constituents
- demonstrated strong community involvement
- ability and skills working in an environment of diverse languages and cultures
- coordination of resource development efforts, including fundraising, partnerships
