Communications Coordinator
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF), founded in 1974, is a New York-based national organization that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy and community education. Program priorities include immigrant rights, economic justice for workers, voting rights, educational equity and youth rights, language access, and the elimination of hate crimes, police misconduct and human trafficking. Qualifications
The Communications Coordinator, who reports to the Executive Director and works with program staff, ideally should possess the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:
- At least 3 years of experience in journalism or nonprofit communications;
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to write quickly, concisely, and with meticulous accuracy and attention to detail;
- Experience using social media tools to promote social justice issues;
- Proven ability to work effectively under tight deadlines on multiple projects with limited supervision;
- Able to work collegially in a team environment;
- Knowledge of Asian American communities and civil rights issues preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Executive Director, staff attorneys and program staff to communicate AALDEF's message to the media, advocacy groups, and legislators;
- Write and edit press releases, media advisories, press kits, talking points, and other materials;
- Organize press conferences and handle incoming press inquiries;
- Manage the organization's website, update Facebook and Twitter pages, and use social media tools to promote advocacy campaigns;
- Write and edit the organizational newsletter, Outlook, and e-newsletter, Righting Wrongs;
- Expand and update media mailing lists; track communications activities for development reports.
