NEW YORK – Chinese Americans, who comprise the largest Asian American group in New York City and nearly half of Asian American New Yorkers, have a lower standard of living than the city’s overall population, according to a census-based profile released today.
The Asian American Federation of New York, a nonprofit leadership organization, reported in the profile that in 2000, Chinese American New Yorkers had lower incomes, higher general and elderly poverty rates, less education, and less command of English than city residents as a whole.
The profile is one of a series of demographic portraits prepared by the Federation’s Census Information Center (CIC), a source of census data and analysis affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau. These documents are designed to increase awareness of Asian American populations in the New York metropolitan area. The Citigroup Foundation and the C.J. Huang Foundation have provided funding to support the profile series. The Chinese American profile is available at www.aafny.org.
“Our census snapshot of Chinese Americans underscores the significant challenges that this rapidly-growing immigrant population faces, including newness to America, little formal education and language isolation,” said Cao K. O, executive director of the Asian American Federation. “The Federation urges policy makers, community leaders, educators, as well as philanthropic institutions to address the needs, suggested in this data, of New York City’s largest Asian American group.”
Major profile facts include the following (regarding 2000 census data unless stated otherwise):
The Asian American Federation of New York is a nonprofit leadership organization that works collaboratively to meet the critical needs of Asian Americans in the New York metropolitan area. Operating since 1990, the Federation strengthens community-based health and social services capacity by supporting its 35 member agencies and other grassroots organizations; amplifies the Asian American civic voice by defining, analyzing, and advocating for policies to address key community issues; and encourages strategic, high-impact philanthropy within the Asian American community by increasing opportunities for connecting time, talent and financial resources with pressing community needs.
The Federation’s Census Information Center (CIC) is the only such center, run in cooperation with the U.S. Census Bureau, that is in the New York metropolitan area and focuses on serving Asian Americans. Established in 2000, the center provides census information, conducts data and policy analysis, and promotes census participation.
