AAF Congratulates Zohran Mamdani on Election as Mayor of New York City
Mamdani is the first-ever Asian American, South Asian, and Muslim mayor, as well as the first immigrant mayor since 1977.
New York, NY — The Asian American Federation congratulates Zohran Mamdani on his election as the first-ever Asian American, South Asian, and Muslim mayor of New York City.
Mayor-elect Mamdani mobilized communities that too often felt like they didn’t have a voice in the halls of power. From Bangladeshi New Yorkers in Jackson Heights to Chinese New Yorkers in Sunset Park, he built a coalition as diverse as the City he will now lead.
At 13% of eligible voters, Asian New Yorkers make up the fastest growing electorate in New York City. Hailing from dozens of different countries and speaking over 50 languages, we are not a monolithic voting bloc. Mayor-elect Mamdani’s campaign demonstrated the strength of Asian voters and the power of our communities when mobilized in our languages and cultures and around specific issues we care deeply about.
As an assemblymember, Mamdani was a co-founder of the New York State Asian Pacific American Task Force and a staunch advocate for marginalized communities. We look forward to continuing our work with the new mayor and city council in building a New York City where everyone can thrive.
