AAF Mourns Win Rozario, Bangladeshi New Yorker Killed by NYPD

The Asian American Federation (AAF) joins the Bangladeshi community in New York City, and especially Ozone Park, in mourning the death of Win Rozario. A 19-year-old Bangladeshi New Yorker, Win Rozario was experiencing a mental health crisis and called 911 for help. Instead, he was fatally shot in his home by NYPD officers on Wednesday.

The shooting death of any of our community members is tragic and unacceptable. Alternatives to police responses for mental health crises are a matter of life and death. Instead of being met with violence, our most vulnerable community members need culturally-competent, compassionate mental health care. We must do better.

We send our deepest condolences to Win’s family and all his loved ones. Please join the Bangladeshi community for a vigil on Friday, March 29th in Jackson Heights’ Diversity Plaza at 5 PM to honor Win’s life and memory.
