Empowering New York’s Asian American Community Since 1989

Asian American Federation Thanks Mayor DeBlasio for Thanksgiving Gift to E-bike Delivery workers

New York, New York:  Today, City Hall and the NYPD reversed and refunded all e-bike tickets adjudicated since February 2020.  The NYPD has refunded almost 70 summonses dating back to early 2020.

The enforcement on electric bikes used by food delivery workers started in August 2017, and the Asian American Federation (AAF) convened a group of advocates to push back against the harsh punishment on delivery workers.  In January 2020, Governor Cuomo legalized e-bikes.  AAF continued to work to close the last few remaining loops for the e-bike delivery workers.

On behalf of the food delivery workers, we thank Governor Cuomo, Mayor DeBlasio, City Hall’s Community Affairs Unit, NYPD, Commissioner Marco Carrion and Senior Community Liaison Xiaomin Zhou, Mayor’s office of Immigrant Affairs and Commissioner Bitta Mostofi, Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings, City Councilmembers Margaret Chin, Carlos Menchaca, Ydanis Rodriguez and the entire City Council who saw the importance of immigrant workers, and struggled together with advocates find a solution for worker justice.

The final step to close out this campaign is to ask City Hall and the NYPD to work with us to return as many confiscated ebikes to the workers so they can get back to work.

In a year with so few joyous moments, we are ecstatic for this opportunity to give thanks and celebrate!
